افعال متعدی و لازم:
در این مطلب به بررسی افعال متعدی (Transitive Verbs) و افعال لازم (Intransitive Verbs) و تفاوت این دو فعل همراه با مثال می‌پردازیم.
افعال متعدی:
افعال متعدی دارای دو ویژگی هستند. او اینکه باید از افعال کنشی (action verb) باشند؛ افعال کنشی یا حرکتی افعالی هستند که انجام یک عمل را نشان می‌دهند. دومین ویژگی افعال متعدی این است که باید حداقل یکمفعول مستقیم داشته باشند. مفعول مستقیم به معنای شخص یا چیزی است که عمل فعل را دریافت می‌کند.
مثال:
He painted the door. (.او در را رنگ کرد)
در این جمله painted یک فعل متعدی است؛ زیرا یک فعل کنشی است که عمل رنگ کردن را نشان می‌دهد و همچنین بعد از آن یک مفعول مستقیم یعنی the door واقع شده است.
رایج‌ترین افعال متعدی در زبان انگلیسی عبارتند از:

افعال لازم:
افعال لازم مانند افعال متعدی دارای دو ویژگی هستند. ویژگی اول این افعال با افعال متعدی مشترک است؛ یعنی هر دو فعل لازم و متعدی باید از نوع افعال کنشی باشند. دومین ویژگی افعال لازم درست برعکس افعال متعدی است؛ یعنی افعال لازم (بر خلاف افعال متعدی) فاقد مفعول مستقیم هستند.
مثال:
The baby laughed. (.نوزاد خندید)
در این جمله laughed از افعال لازم است؛ زیرا یک فعل کنشی است که عمل خندیدن را نشان می‌دهد و همچنین فاقد مفعول مستقیم است.

نکات مهم:
1- افعال لازم با توجه به اینکه مفعول ندارند، هیچگاه مجهول نمی‌شوند.
2- افعال دو قسمتی (Phrasal Verbs) نیز به دو گروه افعال لازم و متعدی تقسیم می‌شوند به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید:
My mother promised to look after my dog. (متعدی)(مادرم قول داد که از سگم مراقبت کند)
We would never come back to this horrible place. (لازم)(من هرگز به این مکان وحشتناک بر نمی گردم)
افعالی که می‌توانند هم متعدی باشند و هم لازم:
برخی افعال هستند که با توجه به نحوه استفاده آنها در جمله ممکن است متعدی یا لازم باشند به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید:
please, write your name here.(.لطفاً، نام خود را اینجا بنویسید)
فعل write می‌تواند هم لازم باشد و هم متعدی، اما در جمله فوق به دلیل اینکه بعد از آن مفعول مستقیم (your name) واقع شده، یک فعل متعدی است.
He can’t write. (.او نمی‌تواند بنویسد)
فعل write در جمله فوق لازم است؛ زیرا فاقد مفعول مستقیم است.
